The Hottest Pepper in the World: Who Has It and Where Can You Find It?

Date Published: 30/01/2026

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to have your mouth literally set on fire, you’re probably curious about the world’s hottest pepper. Maybe you’re a seasoned chilli-head looking to test your limits, or perhaps you’re just fascinated by the crazy world of superhot peppers. Either way, you’ve come to the right place!

Let’s dive into the scorching world of the planet’s most intense pepper and find out who’s brave (or crazy) enough to grow it, and more importantly for us Aussies – where you can actually get your hands on it.

Meet Pepper X: The Current Reigning Champion!

As of 2023, Pepper X officially holds the Guinness World Record as the hottest pepper on Earth, and mate, the numbers are absolutely insane. We’re talking about an average of 2.69 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU), with some individual peppers peaking at a mind-melting 3.18 million SHU. To put that in perspective, your standard jalapeño sits at around 5,000 SHU, and even a habanero only reaches about 350,000 SHU. Pepper X is literally in another league!

This isn’t just some random pepper that someone stumbled upon in their backyard garden. Pepper X is the result of over a decade of careful selective breeding and pure dedication to creating something that pushes the absolute limits of what a chilli pepper can be.

The Mad Scientist Behind the Heat: Ed Currie

The mastermind behind this fiery creation is Ed Currie, founder of the Puckerbutt Pepper Company in South Carolina, USA. This guy is basically the Willy Wonka of the pepper world, except instead of making chocolate rivers, he’s creating peppers that could probably melt steel!

Ed isn’t new to this game either. Before Pepper X claimed the crown, his previous creation, the Carolina Reaper, held the world record from 2013 to 2023. The Reaper clocked in at around 1.6 to 2.2 million SHU, which was already enough to make grown adults cry like babies. But apparently, that wasn’t hot enough for Ed!

What makes Ed’s approach so fascinating is his scientific method. He doesn’t just randomly cross different pepper varieties and hope for the best. He uses careful selective breeding techniques, testing and retesting, measuring Scoville levels with precision, and constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. His fields in South Carolina are kept at a top-secret location – we’re talking Fort Knox levels of security for peppers!

The Catch: You Can’t Actually Buy Pepper X Seeds!

Here’s where things get interesting (and a bit frustrating if you’re hoping to grow your own). Pepper X seeds have not been released to the public. Yep, you read that right. Unlike the Carolina Reaper, which you can actually buy seeds for online, Pepper X remains Ed Currie’s closely guarded secret.

This makes Pepper X incredibly rare and exclusive. You can’t just pop onto a gardening website and order a packet of seeds. Ed keeps tight control over the genetics, and frankly, who can blame him? When you’ve spent over a decade creating something this unique, you’d probably want to keep it under wraps too!

So Where Can You Actually Experience These Superhot Peppers in Australia?

Alright, so you can’t grow Pepper X in your backyard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience the world of superhot peppers right here in Australia. In fact, we’ve got some pretty incredible opportunities coming up that’ll test your heat tolerance!

Festival Season is Coming!

The best place to experience superhot peppers in Australia is definitely at our spicy food festivals. Chilli Fest 2025 is shaping up to be absolutely massive, with events planned across the country that’ll feature everything from mild jalapeños to Carolina Reapers and other superhot varieties.

If you’re in Sydney, you absolutely cannot miss the Sydney SuperHot Chilli and BBQ Fest coming up early on March 8th, 2026 at Entertainment Quarter! This isn’t just your average food festival – we’re talking about a proper celebration of all things spicy, complete with hottest pepper eating contests that’ll separate the pros from the wannabes.

The beauty of these spicy food festival events is that you get to taste superhot peppers in controlled environments with plenty of milk and ice cream on standby! Plus, you’ll meet other chilli-heads who share your passion for pain… er, we mean flavour!

Queensland Gets Superhot Too!

Don’t worry if you’re not in Sydney – Queensland is set to get SuperHot in November 2025 as well! The festival circuit is expanding, which means more opportunities to test your limits with superhot peppers without having to travel interstate.

These Darwin festivals and other regional events are becoming huge drawcards for anyone serious about exploring the upper limits of the Scoville scale. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned veteran of hottest pepper eating contests, there’s something for everyone.

The Superhot 3 Experience

At many of our festival locations, you’ll encounter what we like to call the “Superhot 3” – a trio of the hottest peppers commonly available in Australia. While Pepper X might not be on the menu (since it’s not commercially available), you can definitely expect to see Carolina Reapers, Ghost Peppers, and Trinidad Scorpions making appearances.

These peppers might not hold the world record anymore, but trust us, they’ll still blow your mind! The Carolina Reaper, in particular, is still an absolute beast at over 2 million SHU, and it’s actually obtainable here in Australia through specialty retailers and at our festival events.

Where to Buy Superhot Peppers in Australia

If you’re looking to take the heat home with you, there are several ways to get your hands on superhot peppers right here in Australia:

Online Specialty Retailers

Several Australian online stores specialize in hot sauces, dried peppers, and even fresh superhot varieties when they’re in season. While you won’t find Pepper X, you can definitely score Carolina Reaper seeds, Ghost Pepper products, and other seriously hot options.

Local Farmers Markets

Some brave farmers at weekend markets around Australia are starting to grow superhot varieties. It’s worth asking around – you might be surprised what you can find locally!

Festival Vendors

Of course, the best place to buy superhot sauces and products is directly from vendors at our spicy food festival events. You’ll get expert advice, fresh products, and often the chance to sample before you buy (which is definitely recommended when dealing with million-plus SHU peppers!).

Testing Your Limits Safely

Whether you encounter these peppers at a hottest pepper eating contest or just want to try them at home, safety first! These aren’t regular cooking peppers – we’re talking about serious heat that can cause genuine discomfort if you’re not prepared.

Always have dairy products on hand (milk, ice cream, yogurt), never touch your eyes after handling hot peppers, and start small. Even experienced chilli-heads approach new superhot varieties with respect and caution.

At our festival events, we always have “cooling stations” with milk, ice cream, and other heat-neutralizing foods. The community aspect is fantastic too – there’s nothing quite like sharing the experience with fellow heat-seekers who understand exactly what you’re going through!

The Future of Superhot Peppers

While Pepper X currently holds the record, the race for the world’s hottest pepper is far from over. Pepper breeders around the world are constantly working on new varieties, and who knows? Maybe one day we’ll see an Australian-grown pepper claim the world title!

Until then, there’s plenty of heat to explore right here at home. From the upcoming events in the My Chilli Festival calendar to the growing community of Australian chilli enthusiasts, there’s never been a better time to dive into the world of superhot peppers.
